Eight try thriller at fantastic new ground

Birstall RFC kicked off the season with a victory at their new ground, with an eight try thriller.

Birstall RFC kicked off the season with a victory at their new ground, with an eight try thriller.

The scene was set new ground with pitches to rival the best around and to top it off the club badge had been stencilled onto it.
Can the team match the art work and put the icing on the cake, we did not have to wait for long as soon as new coach Tom Kilburn caught the ball at kick off he lead the attack directly into the opposition half with some great interlinking we ended deep into Sleaford’s 22. The first scrum helped confirm the Green dogs control on the game with the wayside being pushed backwards on every ball. Early pressure led to a try for Joe Wootton, which Harry Alcott converted 7- Nil.

Quickly followed some great attacking play but as Birstall were so dominant in the scrum we could afford to push the risky pass. A ruck close to the Sleaford try line gave easy picking to Jack Morrey to snipe at the back of the ruck. 12-Nil

A lapse in concentration and a couple of decisions going against the Dogs gave Sleaford an opportunity when the dogs were napping to score against the run of play which was Sleaford visit inside only visit that half in to the dogs half. 12-5.

Birstall came back strongly with wave after wave of attack and knocked on just short of the line. Birstall who had been pushing Sleaford back at a rate of knots again exerted the pressure which caused loose ball coming out of the back of their back-rows feet which Jack Morrey dropped on. Converted by Alcott 19-5

Just before half time came the best try of the day, I still can’t decide if it was a moment of madness, laziness or brilliance from second row Frith. Dan found himself racing down the touch line with fellow second row Knott in close support the opposition ere all up flat and seeing the space behind Frith decided to chip them all and a foot race to the ball ensued luckily Centre Hurst dropped on the ball securing the bonus point and to take us into half time 24-5.

Rikki Reading scored his debut try bouncing a player back 5 after picking up from the base of our advancing scrum. 29-5

Just after the opposition defence was preoccupied with trying to punch one of the green dog’s plays and Alcott went straight through the gap he left to score under the posts, Keiran Warner’s kick made it 36-5.

More open play saw Joe Wootton Tip toe his way down the wing to score out wide. 41-5.

Unfortunately the opposition asked the referee to blow up 2 minutes early but the final try was from Kilburn who had reacted to quickly to a penalty on the Sleaford five meter which Alcott tapped and popped to the prop on a Jet line. Warner again added the extras making the final score 48-5 to the Green Machine.

Man of the match Rikki Reading.
Captain Dan Knott who was very happy with the victory said "The whole side can only get better, we know we have a lot more to give and it starts again on Tuesday & Thursday as we build towards Spalding".

Coach Tom Kilburn "It wasn’t perfect by any means but the spectators enjoyed to see the progress being made. The game plan is new and starting to come together on the field but it will take time to be fully up and running. Unfortunately Sleaford came below strength with a few players missing and paid the price. Our strength in depth was tested as we were also missing 12 players who are very much in contention for League rugby, I am very encouraged by what I have seen so far. Our scrum was immense all afternoon and provided a great source of possession even on their put in, to the point we were calling strike moves and lining up our backs as if it was our ball. Now we have to review the performance and improve in some areas ready for Spalding".

Club Chairman Adrian Knight who played his part in the game as front row replacement said "What a great day a lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenee to get the new ground ready and wanted to thank everyone involved. To run out today on this wonderful pitch with so much support on the sidelines shows us how far the club has progressed so far. Believe me this is the start of something special".
Our attention now goes to Spalding who were playing at a higher level last season and a trip to the memorial field in deepest darkest Lincolnshire.
